Pelham bits
Plus d'infos sur Pelham bitsThe Pelham bit is a technical mouthpiece widely used in horse riding for its combined action on the horse's mouth, neck and lower jaw. Known for its leverage effect, the Pelham bit combines the advantages of a snaffle bit and a bridle bit in a single mouthpiece. It can consist of a straight, single or double curb bit, mounted on side shanks of varying length. The addition of a curb chain completes the bit's function by limiting the angle of rocker to 45°, ensuring better control of the horse and greater comfort.
How does a Pelham bit work?
The Pelham bit works on several levels. A first direct action is exerted via the upper rein, which influences the lower jaw and the corners of the mouth. A second rein, attached to the lower ring, activates a leverage effect on the nape of the neck. The longer the branches, the more powerful this effect. This system makes the Pelham very versatile: either with two pairs of reins, for a differentiated action, or with rings for a softened combined effect.
In the case of snap models, the addition of bit washers is recommended to avoid pinching. Straight or tongue-cut versions offer greater stability and comfort for some horses.
For which horses and which disciplines?
The Pelham bit is often used for powerful, bloody horses or horses that are difficult to channel. It helps to straighten the forehand, improve lightness and precision, while guaranteeing good guidance. It is very popular in competitions, particularly show jumping and eventing. However, this is a mouthpiece considered to be severe and should not be used as an easy or punitive solution.
It is only suitable for experienced riders with a stable hand and the ability to dose their actions accurately. Used incorrectly, this bit can lead to defensiveness and even injury. Used correctly, it refines dialogue and perfects responses to aids.
Pelham bit types and their effects
Types of Pelham | Effects |
Single-break Pelham | Direct action with leverage effect, more precise but more incisive. |
Double-break Pelham | Balanced pressure distribution, softer. |
Pelham straight | Stable and direct, ideal for sensitive horses. |
Pelham rubber | Softer, promotes comfort and salivation. |
Pelham tongue passage | Frees the tongue, for horses that project it. |
Factors influencing Pelham hardness
- Length of limbs: the longer the limbs, the greater the leverage.
- Type of barrel: a straight barrel is stiffer, while a curved barrel softens the contact.
- A rubber or resin Pelham is softer.
- Barrel shape: thick = softer; thin = harsher.
- Adjustment of the curb chain: it should not be too tight to avoid blocking the jaw.
