Verdun bit ideal for lateral framing and gentle action

The Verdun bit is a classic mouthpiece that's highly prized for its reinforced lateral framing and comfort. A variation on the olive bit, it features D-shaped rings for better directional control. Thanks to its fixed prongs, it stays perfectly in place without the risk of pinching the commissures, even in the event of unilateral action.

How does a Verdun bit work?

The Verdun bit provides a direct, symmetrical action, while offering clear lateral guidance. When a rein is used, the bit does not swivel excessively, resulting in unbalanced pressure. This bit is often used for young horses in the learning phase, but is also suitable for more experienced horses requiring more channeling, especially those that lean or escape laterally.

It is available in single or double snaffle, but also in tongue or straight version, depending on the horse's sensitivity. Thin barrels accentuate precision, while thicker ones provide more softness.

For which horses and disciplines is it suitable?

The Verdun bit is recommended for :

  • Young horses needing better lateral guidance
  • Stiff horses that find it difficult to turn
  • Horses with limited space in the mouth
  • Horses sensitive to pressure on the corners of the mouth

Widely used in show jumping and basic dressage, it reinforces straightness without hardening the contact.

Which materials and barrels to choose?

Bits are available in a wide variety of materials to meet the specific needs of each horse:

  • Stainless steel: robust, neutral and easy to maintain
  • Sweet iron: promotes salivation and relaxation
  • Copper or cyprium: encourages chewing, relaxing
  • Resin or rubber: soft and supple, ideal for sensitive horses
  • Leather: natural, with excellent tolerance
