Hackamore
Plus d'infos sur HackamoreThe hackamore is a bitless mouthpiece, also known as an ennasure, particularly suited to horses with oral sensitivities or refusing contact in the mouth. Unlike a traditional bit, the hackamore acts via pressure points on the muzzle, trough and sometimes the lower jaw. This mechanism creates a more or less intense leverage effect, depending on the model used, making it a valuable alternative in modern equestrian practice, particularly for fine work or oral care.
How does a hackamore work?
The hackamore can be fitted with two prongs (short or long), a noseband and a curb chain, enabling you to guide your horse without any action in the mouth. The action takes place on both the muzzle and the nape of the neck, making it effective for horses that lean or have injuries caused by repeated use of the bit. The hackamore is a choice alternative for riders seeking to reconcile precision and respect for the animal during certain periods of work. It's the alternative of choice for experienced riders looking for precision, comfort and respect for the horse's mouth.
The different types of hackamores :
Hackamore hardness factors
-
Temple length: The longer the temple, the greater the leverage.
-
Noseband width: A wide noseband distributes pressure better and is therefore softer.
-
A thin or rope noseband makes the action more direct and therefore more severe.
-
Type of noseband: A leather noseband is softer, while a chain or metal noseband makes the effect much harder.
-
Adjustment: A noseband that is too tight locks the jaw, while one that is too loose makes the action unstable. We recommend aiming for a 45° angle for smooth operation.
Using and adjusting the hackamore
To guarantee the hackamore's effectiveness and comfort, a few rules are essential:
- Place the noseband one hand above the nostrils and in front of the apophyses.
- Too low, it compresses the nasal cartilage; too high, it injures the zygomatic bone.
- The bridle must be adjusted so that the lateral parts do not tilt more than 45°
- It is important to ride on long reins, using support reins and not opening reins, which can injure if they pull laterally on the branches.
The hackamore can be a respectful alternative to the bit. In daily work, the hackamore helps the horse to balance itself, to maintain its gaits without constraint, and to better listen to the rider's body. It is highly appreciated in disciplines such as show jumping, eventing, trail riding and horse-ball. But beware: it does not replace a bit for all horses or all situations.
