Double rings bits
Plus d'infos sur Double rings bitsLoose Ring bit: the essentials of rider-horse communication
The loose ring bit, also known as the Chantilly bit, is one of the most widely used bits in classical equitation. It's seductive for its ease of use and ability to transmit precise aids, thanks in particular to its simple snap, which acts directly on the horse's tongue and lower jaw.
-
Basic bit ideal for young horses or daily work
-
Brings clarity to one-sided rein aids
-
Can be used in all disciplines (except dressage competition with single break)
- Available in several materials, barrels and thicknesses
Effects and operation of the single bit
The single crimp divides the bit barrel into two symmetrical parts, connected by a movable joint. This system allows relatively direct and clear action in the horse's mouth.
-
When the rider acts on a single rein, the bit acts in isolation on the corresponding side.
-
This facilitates lateral work, bends and shoulder movements.
-
When both reins are used simultaneously, the joint exerts a centralized pressure, which can have repercussions on the palate if the bit is too thick or ill-fitting. This is known as the nutcracker effect, now largely limited by advances in design and ergonomics.
Good to know: Contrary to popular belief, a simple bit will not tip over in the mouth if the horse can lift his tongue. The "snapping" effect only occurs if the bit's size or thickness is unsuitable.
For which horse? Which rider?
The single ring bit is suitable for a wide variety of horses and riders:
-
Ideal for young horses in training or uncomplicated horses
-
Suitable for riders looking for simplicity and precision
- Can be used for sensitive horses provided the right material is chosen (resin, rubber...)
To be avoided with horses whose mouth is too sensitive to contact with the palate (in this case, prefer a double break or anatomical barrel).
