The gag bit is a mouthpiece designed to help straighten the horse's back by acting on the nape of the neck via sliding uprights. This bit provides a lifting effect, ideal for rebalancing horses that lean too much on the hand or put too much weight on the shoulders. It is ideal for experienced riders looking for precision and lightness in their work.

How does the gag bit work?

The gag bit works by means of leverage. This leverage is made possible by sliding cords, called lifter posts, which exert upward pressure on the headstall of the bridle. This action encourages the horse to shift his weight to his hindquarters.

The action of the bit can be modulated according to the configuration:

  • With two reins: direct and limited action
  • With four reins: snaffle reins for basic effect, bridle reins to activate the lever
  • With rings: simplified but less precise solution

The wider the bit rings, the greater the leverage.

Our different snaffle bit models

At West Cheval, we offer a wide range of snaffle bits to suit all horse profiles. You'll find

  • Single or double snaffle bits: the double snaffle provides a softer effect and better acceptance
  • Needle snaffle
  • bits
  • : improve direction for young or distracted horses
  • Straight or anatomical barrel snaffle
  • bits
  • : distribute pressure evenly
  • Various materials: rubber, leather, resin, stainless steel or synthetic, depending on the horse's sensitivity
  • .

Which bit for which horse?

The gag bit helps to straighten your horse, restore balance and improve the quality of its impulsion.

  • Sensitive or young horses: leather or rubber bits.
  • Experienced or powerful horses: Stainless steel or resin bits.

Please note: the gag bit is forbidden in dressage, even in young horse classes.

The gag bit is designed for experienced riders who are able to manage the leverage effect with delicacy. The use of four reins requires an independent hand, capable of precisely dosing the aids without causing discomfort to the horse. In case of doubt, it is advisable to consult a coach to check that the bit is suited to the rider's level and the horse's needs.

How do I adjust the bit?

  • Make sure that the bit is properly fitted to the snaffle.
  • Prefer a soft setting at the start, especially if you're using four reins.
  • Monitor your horse's reaction at each session.
  • If you're using a single pair of reins or wedding rings, limit the frequency of use to avoid desensitizing the horse.
